I'm Mindy Flexer,

a professional artist and certified art teacher. I taught art for eight years at Greene Street Friends School, and now teach art at my studio, the home of Mindy Flexer Art School.. As a representational painter, I've been on the observational quest for many years now, and find it endlessly rewarding. I love sharing my passion for art with students of any age, and am excited about inviting people into my studio to share the journey with me.

As one of my favorite teachers, Bill Daley, once said, making things is like jumping into an empty swimming pool that will fill up with water while you’re in the air. This is also true of teaching. For me, making and teaching art have become synergistic halves of a larger whole. Taking the leap over and over as an artist has taught me how to nudge my students off the diving board; seeing them jump renews my faith in my own work.

When I’m making art, I’m aware of going through the same process my students do. Like them, I have faith, doubt, excitement, frustration, and ultimately, satisfaction as each work comes into being. Making things always reminds me how demanding and exhilarating the artistic process is. You are invited to view my painting at www.mindyflexer.com.

Since I was a young child, making things has been one of the joys of my life. For the past decade, sharing this with other people as an art educator has been a second joy.  I feel acutely aware of being one of the links in the long chain of artists teaching other artists. I am grateful to be part of this tradition, and I look forward to many more years of making, teaching, and learning about art.
